Therapy for expecting and new parents in the Twin Cities

Pregnancy and being a new parent can result in mental health symptoms.

Too many future and new parents are experiencing...

Anxiety
Depression
Trauma
Fatigue

Becoming a parent is a life-changing experience that can result in an increased risk for mood disorders. Between hormone changes, stress, and fatigue, we understand that expecting and new parents are going through a lot. Our Roots: DBT for Perinatal Health program can help parents with their individual needs, as well as connect them with a support system of others facing the same struggles.

Help for expecting and new parents

At MHS, we’ve created Roots: DBT for Perinatal for individuals who have given birth in the last two years, and who are dealing with mental health symptoms. Whether they’ve experienced mental health symptoms related to their pregnancy, or their existing symptoms have worsened, this program was built to help.

This program teaches DBT skills to help clients manage mental health symptoms that are connected to pregnancy and being a new parent. It also offers an opportunity to connect with other clients who are navigating perinatal mental health symptoms.

Why Roots: DBT for Perinatal?

The perinatal period of a birthing parent is the time frame from conception through the first year following birth (however, hormone fluctuations that impact functioning can occur for the following two years after birth). While mood disorders can impact people at any time during their lives, there is an increased risk during the perinatal period and symptoms can have a unique presentation. Untreated perinatal mood disorders can lead to:

  • Increased relationship problems
  • Poor adherent to medical care and an exacerbation of medical conditions
  • Loss of interpersonal and financial resources
  • Disability/unemployment
  • Child neglect and abuse
  • Developmental delays and behavioral problems
  • Increased tobacco, alcohol, and drug use
  • And in extreme cases, infanticide, homicide, and suicide.
