DBT Informed Strategies for Addressing Adolescent Suicidal Ideation & Self-Injurious Behaviors - ON SITE

Suicidal ideation (SI) and self-injurious behavior (SIB) is becoming increasingly prevalent amongst teens. An important component to providing comprehensive and effective care for this population is safety planning to reduce the risk of self-harm.

Learning Objectives:

  • Define suicidal ideation (SI) and self-injurious behavior (SIB)
  • Identify reasons behind these behaviors in adolescents, as well as warning signs and protective factors for SI/SIB
  • Learn safety planning strategies
  • Review DBT therapeutic interventions to address safety concerns
  • Discuss strategies for communicating with an adolescent about safety

Key Points

This workshop will provide definitions of and prevalence rates for suicidal ideation and self-injurious behaviors within the adolescent population. Participants will learn about the function of these behaviors, risk factors/warning signs, as well as protective factors. This presentation will also discuss safety planning, therapeutic interventions, and communication strategies focused on Dialectical Behavior Therapy techniques. The information will be useful not only for helping professionals, but also for individuals playing supportive roles in teens’ lives. The workshop will include a lecture as well as question and answer panel at the end of the lecture. The content of the presentation will be based on the Rathus Miller DBT manual (2014) and years of cumulative experience.
