RISE for Trauma Stabilization and Recovery
Stabilization-focused DBT for adults affected by trauma
Trauma affects more than memories. It can affect emotions, thoughts, the body, relationships, behaviors, and even how we see ourselves and the world around us.
RISE is MHS’s specialized, skills-based program for adults experiencing the effects of trauma. Rather than starting with painful memories or requiring you to retell your trauma, RISE focuses on understanding where trauma-related dysregulation is happening in your life and building practical skills to create greater stability, control, and connection.
RISE stands for Recognize, Identify, Skills-Based Response, and Evaluate. This straightforward process helps you recognize what is happening, identify the patterns and triggers involved, choose skills that fit what you need in the moment, and evaluate what works.
Grounded in DBT and the Dialectical Trauma Recovery Model (DTRM), RISE recognizes that there is no single way trauma affects people and no single skill or treatment strategy that works for everyone.
Recovery can begin by changing what is happening in your life today.

Built on expertise in DBT and complex trauma
RISE is based on the Dialectical Trauma Recovery Model (DTRM), developed by MHS co-founder and internationally recognized DBT expert Dr. Lane Pederson.
DTRM brings together decades of clinical experience in DBT with contemporary understandings of trauma and recovery. Rather than viewing trauma through a single symptom or treatment approach, DTRM looks at how trauma-related dysregulation can affect emotions, thinking, the nervous system and body, memory, behavior, relationships, and development.
This whole-person approach allows treatment to focus on the areas creating the greatest difficulty in your life and match practical skills to what you need most.
Is RISE right for you?
Trauma can show up in many different ways. RISE may be a good fit if you’re experiencing:
- Emotions that feel intense, unpredictable, or difficult to manage
- Anxiety, hypervigilance, or a persistent sense of being “on edge”
- Shutdown, numbness, dissociation, or feeling disconnected
- Difficult or unwanted physical sensations and reactions
- Negative beliefs about yourself, others, or the world
- Patterns of avoidance, impulsivity, or other behaviors that interfere with your life
- Difficulty with trust, relationships, boundaries, or connection
- Trauma reactions that make everyday life or other therapy difficult
You don’t need to fit neatly into a diagnosis or experience trauma in one particular way. RISE focuses on understanding how trauma is affecting you and building the skills needed to create meaningful change.
What to expect
RISE offers a structured level of care that goes beyond traditional weekly therapy, including:
- Skills teaching and application
- Symptom identification / tracking
- Psychoeducation on rewiring trauma neurology and retraining the nervous system
- A coordinated care team supporting your progress
Working with your current therapist
If you already have an individual therapist, you may be able to continue working with them while participating in RISE. Our goal is to support and strengthen the care you’re already receiving.

In-person vs Virtu-clinic
Choosing between in-person and virtual DBT depends on your individual needs, preferences, and circumstances. Our outcomes show that both formats can be equally effective, so the best option is often the one that feels most accessible and allows you to consistently attend group.
