DBT for Substance Use for Teens

Skills-based DBT for teen substance use

If your teen is using substances to cope, and things at home are starting to feel more unstable, tense, or out of control, we can help.

Waypoint for Teens is a specialized teen substance use and mental health DBT group designed to help break that cycle.

As Minnesota’s DBT leaders for nearly 25 years, our goal is to help teens build safer coping strategies to better navigate life outside of group.

Is Waypoint right for your teen?

Waypoint Teens may be a good fit if your teen:

  • Uses substances to cope with stress, anxiety, or overwhelming emotions
  • Is showing increasing impulsive or unsafe behaviors
  • Has struggled to connect with traditional outpatient therapy or treatment
  • Is creating more conflict or instability at home related to substance use

This program is often a strong fit for teens who need more structure than weekly therapy alone, or who need to focus on mental health treatment in addition to substance use.

What treatment looks like

Waypoint for Teens is a structured intensive outpatient DBT program for adolescents (14-18) focused on building stability and reducing high-risk behaviors.

The program includes:

  • Skills teaching and therapeutic application
  • Symptom identification and tracking
  • A coordinated team approach to care

Working with your teen’s treatment team

If your teen is currently working with external treatment providers and an individual therapist, they can continue working with them while in our program.

We aim to complement – not replace – the support they already have whenever possible.

In-person vs Virtu-Clinic

Is in-person or virtual treatment the best fit for teens’ substance use recovery? Research and MHS outcome data show similar results between virtual and in-person programming, making the best option the one that best fits the teen’s needs and supports consistent participation.

Insurance

MHS is in network with most major insurance companies.

We know insurance can be confusing. Because coverage can vary by plan and service, our team will explain your benefits and options at MHS.
